How short mat bowling started is uncertain. It is rumoured that it was first played in Wales when two South Africans arrived and adapted the outdoor lawn bowls game by playing on a strip of carpet in a village hall. Later they went to Northern Ireland and introduced the game there. The rules and regulations were drawn up and the game of short mat bowls, since then, have been enjoyed by thousands of players.

The Swale Short Mat Bowls League is very successful due to it's unique match format where members have the opportunity to play matches in all the four disciplines of singles, pairs, triples and fours. The League was formed in 1992 by five clubs, Borden, Bredgar, Newington, Rodmersham and Stockbury. As well as league matches, annual championships are held each year.
